Video

Video chat on Fikfak

Video is something two people opt into once a conversation is already going. It is not a feed, not a broadcast, and not the first thing that happens. Both sides agree or it does not start.

Why video comes second

On platforms where video is the entry point, the interaction is essentially a lottery: you are connected to a stranger, you both look at each other, and one of you leaves. It produces a lot of camera time and very few conversations. Fikfak puts text first for the plain reason that it works better — by the time video is on the table, both people have already decided the other is worth the time.

Practically, that means someone suggests it inside an existing thread and the other agrees. There is no queue to join and no roulette. If you would rather never use video, that is a completely normal way to use the site; a great many members are text-only permanently.

Nothing is recorded by the platform. That is not the same as nothing being recorded — the person on the other end can point a phone at their screen, and on any service, anywhere, some of them do. This is worth internalising once rather than being surprised by later.

Before you turn the camera on

Look at your background

The most common accidental disclosure is not a face. It is a piece of post with an address on it, a window with a recognisable view, or a work lanyard on a hook. Thirty seconds of looking behind you solves it permanently.

Assume it can be captured

No platform can stop a screen recording. Decide what you are comfortable with existing outside the conversation, and stay on that side of the line regardless of how the chat is going.

Do not let yourself be rushed

Pressure to go on camera immediately, especially combined with pressure to move to another app, is the standard shape of a scam. A person who is genuinely interested can wait until you are ready.

Common questions about video that are really about something else

Frequently asked questions

Does video cost extra?

Video is part of private conversations rather than a separately billed feature. What sits behind a paywall generally is on the free access page.

Can I use video without showing my face?

You can, and a lot of people do at first. Whether the other person stays interested is up to them, but nothing on the platform requires your face.

Does the site record calls?

The platform does not record them. It also cannot prevent the other participant from doing so with a second device, which is true everywhere and worth planning around.

What if someone starts a call without asking?

Decline it and block them if it repeats. Ignoring a stated boundary in the first ten minutes tells you everything you need to know about how the rest would go.
